First of all, congratulations on your sweet new addition to your family!
Having a baby no doubt brings so many exciting surprises, but the one surprise you may be unprepared for is post-pregnancy hair loss. Hair loss after the baby arrives is not as uncommon as you might think.
Forty to 50 percent of new moms will begin to see some hair shedding anywhere from one to five months after baby comes along. This usually peaks at about the four-month mark, according to the American Pregnancy Association.
And if you’re wondering, or worried, that your newly-discovered receding hairline will be permanent, rest assured it most likely won’t. Like many changes that occur during pregnancy, this one is both normal and generally temporary.
Post-pregnancy hair loss is not considered true hair loss. Rather, dermatologists refer to it as “excessive hair shedding,” according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
The cycle of growth
There are different phases to the hair growth cycle, and your follicles are not always actively producing hair. While the growth stage can last for two years or longer, the follicles will rest for about two months before gearing up to grow again.
When you become pregnant, there will be a sudden change in estrogen levels that shock the hair follicles into shutting down for a while and reducing their normal shedding of hair.
But there’s no reason to worry — those follicles are not damaged, nor are they permanently affected; they’re just ... resting. So the hair loss you’d normally experience (most of us lose between 50 and 100 hairs each day) is delayed.
Post-pregnancy, when these hormones eventually normalize, your hair will start to shed before it returns to its normal growth cycle, which usually happens pretty quickly. So by the time you’re ready to pose for those first-birthday photos, or maybe even before, your hair will have reverted to its original thickness and luster — maybe even better than before!
